TRANSPORTATION

Transportation runs on real-time connectivity

Cellular coverage for real-time operations

In-building coverage from curb to gate to platform, and through the tunnels in between.

Every moment in a transportation hub depends on real-time coordination and uninterrupted digital awareness. Passengers expect instant travel updates and intuitive movement from curb to gate, platform or terminal, while operational teams stay synchronized across concourses, tunnels, airfields, rail lines and back-of-house zones. Reliable end-to-end cellular coverage is now transportation infrastructure — as essential as signaling, public-safety systems and power. And in a tunnel there is no outside to add a tower to — the network has to be brought inside.

ANDREW® brings the mobile operators’ networks inside and distributes them across terminals and concourses, reinforced structures, underground platforms, supporting tunnel segments and multi-level parking facilities. Whether the answer is a building-wide distributed antenna system (DAS), targeted small cells or both, ANDREW designs it as a true neutral-host foundation — energy-efficient and ready to scale.

Safety & security

Safety, security & smart facilities

A rising ecosystem of mobile and connected systems depends on end-to-end coverage, and these systems must function everywhere — including reinforced structures, below-grade stations and back-of-house operational spaces:

  • Mass notification and Wireless Emergency Alerts to every phone on site
  • Public-safety communications for first responders, including underground
  • Lone-worker duress and safety for crews in tunnels and below-grade areas

Frequently asked questions

Transportation cellular coverage FAQs

Answers about indoor signal, DAS, small cells, carriers, Wi-Fi and underground coverage.

Why doesn’t outdoor 5G reach inside a terminal or station?

The macro network was built to cover ground, not to get through it. Reinforced terminal structures, deep concourses, below-grade platforms and tunnel segments absorb cellular signal — often enough to take a strong outdoor signal down to nothing before a passenger reaches the gate. Adding towers outside does not fix it, because the structure is the obstacle.

What’s the difference between a DAS and a small cell — and which do we need?

A DAS distributes every operator’s network across a large or complex building on one shared system; a small cell adds focused cellular capacity in a specific area. ANDREW offers both — the ERA® DAS platform and ONECELL® in-building small cells — and helps match the right approach, or a combination, to your terminal, station or system.

Will it support all our carriers?

Yes. ANDREW’s platform is one infrastructure, approved by global operators, carrying public cellular, private networks and public safety from pre-4G through 5G.

Do we still need Wi-Fi?

Yes — they do different jobs. Wi-Fi carries the systems the operator runs — kiosks, back-office, baggage, building services. A DAS or small cell brings the operators’ cellular networks to every passenger on any carrier, and only cellular carries E911 that knows where the caller actually is rather than where the account is registered, Wireless Emergency Alerts to every device in the building and public-safety communications.

Can it cover tunnels and underground platforms?

Yes — supporting tunnel segments and below-grade platforms are core to the design. One shared system carries every operator at once, so a passenger on one carrier and an operations lead on another have service on the same platform.

Is this proven, or are we the test case?

Proven. ANDREW’s all-digital DAS is operating at scale today on more than a decade of digital deployments, and is first to connect all three major U.S. operators, across every major RAN vendor, digitally on one DAS — deployed at scale, not promised on a roadmap.
